A collaboration between Dr. Sai Veeraraghavan (The Ohio State University) and Dr. Erik Rothacker (Metro Schools) has afforded students a unique opportunity to dive into projects involving electron microscopy.
Last year, a proposal was submitted to Hitachi High-Tech America Inc. to have Metro serve as a host site for a TM4000 Plus tabletop scanning electron microscope. The proposal was approved, and Metro was granted the equipment on long term loan. In short order, staff and students were trained in the use of the electron microscope and the work being done on site has broadened in exciting ways.
In January, a group of students participated in a two-week course led by Dr. Veeraraghavan and Dr. Rothacker to earn certification as qualified independent operators of the scanning electron microscope. They now have access to use their new skills for research projects and to learn more about the STEM opportunities at the college level.
