During the week of January 16, ten Metro students traveled to the nation's capital with instructor Pat Frase and Director of External Affairs Anthony Alston to participate in a civic engagement program called Close Up. Founded in 1971, Close Up is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, civic education organization that believes a strong democracy requires active, informed participation by all citizens.
Using Washington, DC as a living classroom, Close Up allows high school students make personal connections with the people and institutions that embody our nation’s past and present. On this trip, students had the honor of meeting with the staff of Congresswoman Joyce Beatty and representatives from the offices of Senator Sherrod Brown and J.D. Vance.
Students returned inspired to become active participants in our democracy and expressed a strong desire to return next year. Information about fundraising and planning for next year's trip will be shared soon.
